Not because you're bad at languages. Because your brain, quite literally, stopped hearing that sound before your first birthday.

Your Brain Made This Decision Before You Could Talk

Here's the part that explains everything: newborns can perceive any sound in any language. But by six months old, exposure to their native language reduces their ability to perceive sounds that don't exist in it. Half a year old, and the brain has already specialized.

That's why Japanese infants can't reliably distinguish English "l" and "r" sounds, and babies raised in Spanish-speaking households can't hear the difference between English "b" and "v." Not a flaw. A feature — your brain pruned sounds it decided weren't useful, to get faster at the ones that were.

The catch: as an adult learner, you're now trying to un-prune sounds your brain filed away as a baby.

Sounds English Speakers Never Learned to Hear

Mandarin tones. In English, tone changes emotion, not meaning. In Mandarin, the same syllable said with four different tones means four completely different words. English ears aren't trained to treat pitch as meaning-bearing at all — which is exactly why tones feel so slippery at first.

Hindi aspirated consonants. Hindi distinguishes between a "p" with a small puff of air and a "p" without one — two entirely separate sounds. To untrained English ears, the difference is nearly undetectable, even though it changes the word completely.

Arabic pharyngealized sounds. Arabic has consonants pronounced deep in the throat that simply don't map onto any English letter. The closest English sounds are shaped completely differently — further back, more constricted — which is why they're some of the hardest sounds for English speakers to reproduce.

Swedish's sj-sound. A rare fricative that barely exists outside Swedish, made with a very specific tongue and lip shape English speakers have never had to use.

Nasal vowels in French and Portuguese. English has nasal consonants (m, n), but not nasal vowels — where air flows through the nose while saying a vowel sound. French and Portuguese both lean on this heavily, which is why it's one of the first things that gives away a non-native accent.

Wait — English Has a Rare Sound Too

Here's a twist most learners don't expect: the English "th" sound (in "think" and "the") is actually pretty unusual worldwide. Most languages don't have it at all — which is exactly why so many learners of English substitute a "d," "z," or "s" sound instead.

Difficulty runs both directions. It's not that English is "easy" and other languages are "hard." Every language has sounds that feel foreign to someone.
